A college-list conversation you can finish in 15 minutes
Free resources for school counselors, college-access programs and families.
Open the college-list worksheetNo student account is required. Use the public worksheet in a meeting, share the blank activity with a class, or print a brief to take home. The goal is one verified next step for each college, rather than a promised admission result.
A 15-minute classroom activity
- Minutes 0–3: choose two colleges. Use a student's existing list or fictional examples. Open a college comparison for context.
- Minutes 3–8: check three assumptions. Can the family verify cost after aid? Does admission include the intended major? Have application and aid deadlines been checked on official pages? Leave a box unchecked when the answer is uncertain.
- Minutes 8–12: create the meeting brief. In the College List Reality Check, generate the brief and choose Print / save PDF. Students can keep their own copy.
- Minutes 12–15: agree on one action. Name who will check the missing information, which official source they will use, and when they will return to it.

Example: turn an unchecked box into a useful question
Fictional example: a student has checked College A's application deadline, but has not confirmed the cost or access to nursing. Their next actions are to run the official net-price calculator with a family member and read the nursing program's separate admission requirements. A campus acceptance rate cannot answer either question.
Choose the resource for the conversation
- Affordability checklist: separate historical averages, grants, loans and the family's own estimate.
- Application timeline: turn research into tasks, then verify each college's dates.
- College comparisons: review costs, outcomes, major entry and questions to ask both campuses.
- College data notes: discuss what federal institutional statistics can and cannot establish.
Keep student details with the student
The worksheet holds entries in the page's memory and clears them on reload; its code does not upload the entered college names. Printing or copying a brief includes those names. Ordinary request logs and the site's optional analytics still apply. Do not enter student identifiers or household financial details in the college-name fields. Saved account features are separate; see the privacy policy.
Share a useful resource
You may share this page or the blank worksheet with families and adapt the downloadable activity. No purchase, registration, endorsement or backlink is required. If you cite a data note, link the specific note and retain its original source and limitations.
